Criticism :

Authors of police novels can be divided into two categories. In the first category, authors like to describe crime scenes and murders, and in the other category the authors prefer describing a landscape, a feeling or a mysterious place.
James Lee Burke belongs to the latter category because his descriptions of Lousiana and of the bayou are very personnal and emotive which makes his writing absolutely brilliant. Furthermore, he's got a real talent for bringing the characters to life; the words used to describe them make them seem so real.

What about the storyline? Well, it's not very original nor terrificly suspensive but that's what James Lee Burke wanted to do : with a simple storyline, he wanted to build a solid analyse of people's inhumanity.

To sum up, "Crusader's Cross" is a very good book for people who don't expect blood or a cliffhanger at the end of every chapter."
